The Harris Files:  The hurricane season - dreaded time for the Caribbean

October 01,, 2018

The hurricane season is a dreaded time in the Caribbean, it begins in July and ends in November, during those months, most people in the region are on edge each time a storm warning is issued by the Meteorological Office in their country.

Last Thursday, Barbadians braced themselves for the backlash from Tropical Storm Kirk , the centre was forecast to pass 50 miles north of the island between 8 a.m and 2 p.m with tropical storm force winds reaching 115 miles outwards.

Just before 7 p.m a heavy down of rain came and lashed the island for 14 hours, several areas in Bridgetown, Christ Church and St Philip were flooded, the water reaching 13 feet in some places.

Eleven persons were rescued from their homes, including a pregnant woman on the shoulders of a Barbados Defence Force soldier, drivers abandoned their vehicles in waist-high waters and several parts of the island were faced with power outages.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, as a result of what took place during the flooding, Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who was out of the island when rain came, said the preparation the 2019 hurricane season will start early.

"Our country's infrastructure is in a woeful state and we need to be able deal with that. We don't have the money to deal with it all at once but we have prioritised what we need to and between the various ministries we are going to go after it systematically. A lot of roads have been built in Barbados without any kind of drainage and channelling of water and without sufficient attention to the gradient. So if the gradient of the road is going in the wrong direction, the water will go in the wrong direction", the Prime minister said.

It has been 63 years since a hurricane caused mass destruction in Barbados. In 1955, Hurricane inflicted severe damage on the island killing over twenty people, since then, Barbados has not been hit by a hurricane.

Even though Barbadians have not felt the impact of a hurricane for over 60 years, they have seen other Caribbean islands ripped apart by hurricanes during that time. The backlash from Kirk was a reminder that they should be prepare for a storm at all times.

Manager of Courtesy Rent-A-Car in Barbados, West Indies

“Put yourself in the position of the client…how would you feel?”

These have been the words that guide the life and work of Ian Proverbs, manager of Courtesy Rent-A-Car in Barbados. After completing his studies, Ian immediately entered the fast-paced world of airline work at the Seawell International Airport, now known as the Grantley Adams International Airport.

He first worked with a small charter airline company before moving to Barbados’ leading airline handling company, Seawell Air Services. A good foundation is always necessary in any journey. His time in the airline industry was hectic, fulfilling, and most of the time, enjoyable.

Ian started as a passenger agent responsible for check-in and flight arrivals for different airlines such as British Airways, Pan Am, and Ward Air. He transferred to the operations department as a load controller responsible for the weight and balance of the aircraft.

While at the airport, he learned that timekeeping is extremely important because no one wants to be late. He also learned to always place one’s self in the shoes of the client in front of you and think of how the client would react to a situation. Just imagine traveling for eight hours on a plane and arriving at your paradise location without your baggage.

He moved on to a management position within the retail sector after almost 10 years in the airline field. It was quite a change for him and it was not nearly as fulfilling as being in the airline industry. After a brief four years, he returned to the tourism field, this time, within the auto rental field, which would become the place where he would find the most satisfaction.

Ian joined Courtesy Rent-A-Car in 1991. He found a business that is never the same every day, a job that is challenging and enjoyable, and a team focused on the customers.

From 1991 up to the present, with a brief break from 1995 to 1999, he has led a team of remarkable people who go out of their way to meet and exceed the expectations of their clients. Customer satisfaction is his focus and it has established a significant repeat customer base.
